CRIES — Neonatal Pain Scale

Neonatal postoperative pain assessment (32-60 weeks GA) evaluating crying, O2 requirement, vitals, expression, and sleep.

The CRIES Neonatal Pain Scale assesses pain in nonverbal neonates and infants <6 months using five objective indicators (Crying, Requires oxygen, Increased vital signs, Expression, Sleeplessness) and guides analgesic administration during procedures. This easy-to-use tool has been validated in multiple settings and facilitates standardized pain assessment in vulnerable patients unable to self-report. CRIES scores ≥4 suggest significant pain requiring intervention with opioids or other analgesics.
