PEWS

Pediatric Early Warning Score for detecting clinical deterioration

The Pediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) uses a combination of behavioral, respiratory, and hemodynamic parameters to identify hospitalized children at risk of clinical deterioration requiring higher level of care or ICU admission. Validated in children ages 2-18 years, this scoring system helps bedside nurses and clinicians standardize assessment of stability and trigger escalation of care before adverse events occur. Use this tool as part of rapid response team protocols on pediatric inpatient units to identify deteriorating patients and facilitate timely interventions.
