APGAR Score

Newborn assessment: Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration

The APGAR Score is the standard assessment tool for evaluating neonatal well-being and physiologic adaptation at 1 and 5 minutes after birth. This 5-component score (Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, Respiration) guides immediate resuscitation decisions and prognostic counseling for all newborns. APGAR scores correlate with neonatal morbidity and mortality, with lower 5-minute scores indicating need for more intensive interventions.
